In a bittersweet moment, it occurred to me this morning as I woke up for the 3rd or 4th time that the solution to the issue I've been having at work, people lack tech savvy to update a webpage, could be solved with a little PHP and XML. This solution would also stream-line the creation process and better represent the template that we're using.

Now, of course, this will all remain theoretical because the powers-that-be have their own tech guys back in Florida somewhere who actually do all the website stuff, and I'm just a lowly temp who's to do as he's told, but still, I like having solved it.

Basically they have me shooting video for training materials. Now I'm a hacker, not a videographer, but they aren't looking for Golden Globe quality, so i think I can handle it. the killer is, after I finisht he video, they've got me embedding it into a Word Document. This si quite possibly the worst thing you can do with video IMNSHO, but hey, lowly temp, right?

The killer is, they then send my Word doc to Headquarters, where they make it into a website. Now we all say "But YOU'RE a Hacker" with a few other hackers adding the desonate "Ouch! That's so wrong." to catch thos eof you who aren't hackers up the main conflicts in this process are:

Web video can stream, Word video is embedded.
Web documents are of length document, Word documents are of length 11 inches.
Word documents turned into web documents tend to quintuple code length, delete readability, and generally frustate later attempts to alter documents.

The upside that anyone with a 6th grade education can open a Word document, and change the text. They might need a lowly temp to shoot clean video for the new instructions, but the text is updatible by all.

What occurred to me this morning is that the training documents aren't actually a single thought, they're chains of little thoughts. Each 'step' in a processes is a node, containing an index denoting order, a text field containing verbal instructions, and a video element with my pretty pictures. If I were to treat it not as an HTML document, but an XML document with [step] elements, then I could write a simple PHP script to render the page by looping through a draw step instruction until the next index has a NULL verbal instruction component. Then , I can write another PHP page to open a Step in an editable form, so you can chang ethe value stored for the XML table.

GENIUS!

Now I just need to be able to convince three layers of management to let me write it, and post it, and access restricted company servers to do so. *sigh* Another reason why after I wake up, I like going back to sleep.

Why I lave/hate the World of Darkness

So the article below is short, and to the point, but it's also a perfect example, in my opinion, of what the World of Darkness should look like to mortals.

Mortals see a politician, who used to be a great reformers, who's fallen. I see a Retainer of a powerful vampire, who was used by his master to disrupt the intests of his rivals. The minion did a lot of damage to teh enemies power base, and his rise to govenor gave greater power to his master. But once the master's pawn gained such power, the others turned on him now, and the pawn is fallen. But the vampires are all untouched, unsoiled by violence or destruction, and a new pawn is alway s waiting just behind the next door.

So I've found myself more in input mode than output mode tonight.

This afternoon I finished off Book 3 in Wheel of Time again. I seem to have lost my copy, so my wife checked one out on my last library run. With her out of town for a few days I managed to finish off teh Spiderman book I got, the Dresend Files 2, and the Wheel of Time 3 in about 4 days.

Of course this means library run time.
I know where Wheel of Time 4 and 5 are, so I decided to just get Dresden 3. They had it on CD and Book, so I got both, I enjoy being able to listen while I drive, and it's a damn site safer than reading while I drive.

then I decided to go look for Robert Howard, just to verify they didn't have Solomon Kane. They didn't, and there was one I almost picked up, but I didn't want to get a lot of books. Since I wanted the Solomon Kane for an RPG, I went to look a tthe RPG section. That's 793.9 for those who enjoy browsing in the Dewie Decimal parts of the library. Then I decided to go look at the comics. I wanted to get some Sandman, because I've never read it, and I'm thinking about my writing, and the story I'm working on has paralells. I also wanted Dirk Gently's Hollistic Detective agency, and Log Dark teatime of teh soul, but they were out. While looking at comics, I made an AMAZING discovery. They aren't Fiction!

Now while the reality that Batman does indeed have a non-fiction tag of 741.7... that ment that theortetically there could be a section of comics in teh library that weren't in the kiddie section. Sure enough I found more books in the stacks, and while they didn't have Sandman 1, I picked up Sandman 4, because I wanted a feel, not the exact story. I also noticed a Scanner Darkley comic. Of course I had to get this, and since I had it, I might as well get Scanner Darkly in Paperback to compare against.

At this point, my 1 or 2 books is up to 5, and I'm in huntung mode, so I go through all my authors in teh catalog, looking for new reciepts. Much to my shock,I ahven't read any laurell K Hamilton in 2 years, so I pick up the next Anita Blake and Meredith Gentry book. I'm hopeing these are better than the last two, as of late Hamilton has devolved from interestingly dark and sentual horror with some graphic sex to slasher nerd pr0n, but I still like the theory behind the characters, even if I do find myself saiying "ok, we get it, she has yet another orgy. Can wer get back to the plot now?" Seriously Meredith Gentry 4 was 400 pages, the plot andanved less than 48 hours, and there were 14 different sexual encounters. At this point she's had close to 50 partners since her last cycle.

Long story short, I came home with 8 books, which is close to 100 hours of reading. I don't think I'll be writing a lot of fiction in the next two weeks.

Then again, I did just do 550 words on why I'm not writing tonght...

Now up to bed to read, I want to get 40 to 50 pages of Dresden 3 down before I pass out tonight.

So I'm having an interesting conflict today.

I'vew been fighting for two days to have the Prestige Award for blood Drives reduced becasue the FDA has discriminatory practices. The rub is that the discrimination is helpful, in not strictly neccissary, that the restrictions don't actually affect me, and that I really do support the idea of blood drives. Also , there's that naggling little point that the most obvious of thier discrimination, that against gays, is one I share on a personal level. I can't help but wonder today if I should be more bothered by the fact that while I don't condone homosexuality, I'm willing ot take a stand to protect the rights of homosexuals. Is that being a good American? Is it being a bad christian? Times like these I really wish there was a passage in teh gospel where Christ interacted with an openly gay male. Really help answer that who;e What would Jesus do issue.

I think maybe tomarrow I'll start going over some of my old fiction and getting it cleaned up and moving again. I jsut can't help but fear that someone will steal my ideas and use them. It's irrational, because I even suspect people like the Popes, though I know full well they've got no desire to have my work, and wouldn't use it as thier own even if they did. I guess that's paranoia.

Speaking of , Jim butcher gets my new favorite Paranoia quote "Just because your Paranoid doesn't mean there's not an invisable demon about to eat your face." I like....

I didn't post anything yesterday, and I should have. I'm trying to get one post a day, no matter how trival, or twitter worthy it might be.

I had a rather powerful dream Saturday/Sunday. I'm going to be working a story out of it, but basically a group of evil wannabes find thier power enhanced to useful levels by the arrival of a talent who doesn't know she's gifted, so they manage to convince her and her firends to go back in time, so they can siphone off her powers over the dacades when they needed it.

Granted, there's a dozen holes there still, but it's dream logic, so all things considered it's pretty solid.

Not a bad quiz, though it's a bit Biased. I can't tell exactly which way, though Im assuming it's tad anti-Republican, and the Republican statements came across as Solid absolutes, using MUST, ALWAYS, and other firm words, the Democratic ones seemed less absolute. That means that Strong reactions (more against that for) are likely on Republican questions, but mild to nutral responces are more likely in democratic ones.

I've bene thinking a lot about Status si Vampire, and I've come to the following conclusions: Status isn't recognisability, though people who have status tend to be more recognisable. Status isn't respect/fear level, though those who are feared/respected tend to get more status. Status is a measure of how well listened to you are, it's a "on a scale fo 1 to 5, 1 being never, and 5 being always, how likely are you to a) ask this person's advice/opinion, b) do what this person tells you to.

To prove this, let's consider a parnoid prince who never shows his true face. People won't recognise him, but when word gets around the Prince says no hunting the Ducet family, nobody does it, because the Prince has status. Likewise, consider the unaknowledged Carthian childre of an Invictus Prince. Likely EVERYONE knows who this is, and they may flock to him, but in the greater scheme of city politics, nobody's listening to his opinion, so he's maybe a 2 or 3.

So that's what status means in game, but players need to know all three things, not just the last, so I'd suggest finding wording that allows you indicate all three but only give status as the 'listened too' number. Gving us Status (how listened to you are), Regard (how respected/feared you are), and repute(how known you are). Of course, having regard and repute won't affect anything, but it'll help describe your character in standardized terms.

ie. The Phantom Prince would be "Status 5, with a regard of a status 5, and a repute of a status 1."
The Childre would be "Status 2, with an appropriate regard, but repute worthy of a status 5."

The dreams are back, and I've missed them.

Last night was interesting, there was a theme through out, but it was taken different ways.

The first scene was San Diego. My father was there and we were going to a Baseball game. In the parking lot of the game I discovered my car had be broken into, bu nothing was taken. Every time I mentioned something that might have been stolen, someone else had gotten it out of the car.

When we got inside, the stadium was domed, and it was huge, and they had a sky scene painted on the dome. The only way you could tell that it wasn't real was to look off to the right, where you could see some girders. I had pointed this out to a large black lady I'd been talking with in line. There was a sign stating that the Sea Hawks would be moving to San Diego in 2009. This made me happy, as I like the Seahawks. I also noticed a star.

There's a hard scene shift, I can't remember this one well. I'm not me, and I'm talking to someone about the star. It can't be a star because it doesn't move with the other stars, but there's no tail for a comet. I know what this means, but I know I can't prove it because the tech level of where we are doesn't have that sophisticated of technology. ((Insert here: it's a comet or meteor hurling directly at the earth.)) Rather like the feeling I get in D&D when I'm playing an INT 10 character, and I have a flash of insight that the player would never get. I keep coming back to this, I know, but I can't 'know' in this reality. The person I'm talking to has been seeing it for almost a week. He talks to a 'princess' who's been tracking it for months.

There's a thought in here somewhere that the planet was picked up and moved recently, and it shouldn't still be coming right at us if it was moved. Also I consider the possibility that the being who moved it did it to either avoid, or align, the comet. ((I get the feeling this was a dream I had earlier this week, but I can't remember it))

There's a scene change and I'm now a female elf. Light hair, pale skin. A kind of dream voice-over monologue informs me that the elves like me are an underground race, and that we've been enslaved by giant/troll kind of creatures. They're using us to do some kind of mining, and every so often they go out and get more to bring in. I've been promoted fairly highly, to a kind of house servant, and I'm looking to escape. I've found a good knife weapon, and for some reason have a cloak of invisibility. After a lot of talking, exposition, and getting a feel for the area, a chance to escape comes. I make for the doors, and trip, fall, skid, and get thrown into the air. I manage to fly somehow, and come down, instead of right by the door, almost a mile away.

I know this is a good thing because it means I've bypassed the first two gate, the most heavily guarded ones, and they won't be able to get to me before I can get to the far ones (they're called east and west in the dream) I'm in a kind of deep valley, at a T intersection. There are Giant doors facing me down each side of the T, there are obvious scouts for the bad guys along the walls, and they've seem me and they're coming for me. I break for the left gate, and there are 4 I have to pass, two in front of me, one dead even, and one behind. I manage to out pace the two behind, but just barely. I use my distance from the far wall to get past a third, but they're close. I reach the ramp to the doors just after the last scout. There are three people on the ramp, and I walk right by them through the doors.

Once I'm inside, I have to stop and think about how I managed that, they could have touched me, or just grabbed me. I decide it was the cloak of invisibility, and I try to consider why I didn't use that when I was running. They come into the room, and I use it again to hide. I can see sigils and pictures on the walls, they're talking about things, one of which is the comet hurling towards earth.

Scene change - I'm a man now, and I've been him before, but not tonight. I'm trying to deal with the comet. It's modern era, but the suit I'm wearing is more of a 20s style thing. I've also got a bowler hat. this is where it gets confusing, to close to dawn, to many other things stored, but I do know I'm dealing with someone who can help, it might be the person who moved the planet in the other scene. I spent a fair bit of time unconscious in this one, having been knocked out by a blow to the head by someone. Often, when i get knocked out, I jump to another person, the assistant who first started monitoring the comet earlier. He too is an overweight dark haired man in a 20s style suit. they both keep trying to same things over and over, getting knocked unconscious, switch bodies and try again. At one point, they're in a cell/room together, having just woken up from being knocked unconscious, and they're discussing what to do.

All I can remember form last night is a pirate ship (having just watch Pirates 3, I think I know where that come from ) but it’s got these mechanical legs that come out of the bottom that let it walk on dry land. I called it the Scuttle.

I am but young in the ways of the Devine, being named to my calling by my maker but a few years ago, and yet, I feel the need to tell what I know to be true, if only to help educate the few I know to be of my line, and yet not of my calling. I am Uriel, the twenty-first of that name, and I am created.

All that I know I learned from my maker, a fine old man who had carried the Fire of the Devine within his breast for over a century. He was beginning to gutter when he made me, and though he was aged, his righteous vengeance was truly a site to behold. He told me that I was made, as he was, to serve as an agent of Fury for the Restless Dead. He said that the first of our line was made by God himself in Egypt in the time of Pharaohs, and his first task was the death of the First Born of all who did not pay homage to the Devine.

He taught me that there are many kinds of created, and that most he met claimed to follow a Magnum Opus, a great work designed to make them mortal once more. But while we (whom they call Ulgan) are like the others, we are different from them as well, for we remember our death and in that we are set apart. Even our controlling 'humor' in their alchemical scheme of the universe is unknown in traditional alchemy. I call it what it is, a shoe horn to fit all that we are into their model of the Universe. They seem to forget that a great writer once said, "There are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

The true purpose that I serve, the purpose all our kind were made to serve, is that of agent between the realms of the living, and those of the spirit. This is why we corrupt the earth, bringing spirit and flesh closer with our very presence. This is why we can see the beings unbound by physical form. It is our duty, our very nature, to seek out those who are spirit and yet remain in the realm of flesh, and to complete the tasks they lack the flesh to complete. My line, the line of Uriel, are the bringers of Retribution. We seek out those who have died, but not passed on to the next step in the cycle of life, and fulfill their need for balance in the Physical world, so they may pass on. My hands have been stained with the blood of killers and fiends who claim to have human souls, and it was good. For such things were we, whom the call the Ulgan, created.

That is not to say that all of my 'line' are created, as I, to serve as the Fury of the Dead. Just as there are several kinds of spirits, there must be several kinds of spirit helpers. I will not speak for them, for they have tongues of their own. It is enough that I know they exist. I have heard tales also of beasts made of both flesh and spirit who patrol the border between worlds, forcing those who don't belong back across the divide. I have always been inclined to call these tales fiction, but then I am reminded that as I do not serve the Great Work, so the fact that it does not seem to fit my world view does not make it false. I will not make the same failing as my fellows.

My maker was wont to wax philosophical, I fear from to much exposure to those who follow the Great Work. He would say that perhaps there is an economy of soul, as some scientist proposed an economy of energy. That souls, like energy, are neither created nor destroyed, they simply change states. By doing that which do, we free the souls of the dead to be brought forth in new bodies. I would think if such were the case, I would not have had to hold his head in my lap as the divine spark died within him. Surely anyone who served so truly would have earned the right of just one of the souls he sent beyond.

Daily Updates and Creativity

First thing to remember: Dana and Alex are out of town for the week, visiting Grandma in San Diego. So as always, I've been sitting here with no one but myself to interrupt my train of thought for two days, and the insanity is creeping back in.

So with that in mind, I decided it's time to start doing more internet writing. The first victim was all of my games at Macray's Keep (www.macrayskeep.com). Currently I'm playing in eight, Two Palladium Fantasy, three d20 D&Ds (one of which is FR) A Fuzion Combat game with a distinctly DBZ flavor, a Superhero's Unlimited Mecha vs. Bugs game, and a Paranoia game. Also, I'm running two games, One is the Noobz class for the site, and the other is an experiment in game design. I've posted to every possible action in every game now, and I don't think it'll need more posting for a few hours.

So then I started reading Live-Journals. Rudy had these links to what are basically old Door games for the Internet era, with a Pyramid scheme recruiting device built in. They're good for wasting some time, about 2-3 hours a day, but I have 16 hours of James to deal with, and let's face it, that's a long time to be alone with me.

That of brings me to here. I'm writing in a journal, blogging about my life, because my life is so incredibly boring at the moment that I need to do something like this to keep me (relatively) sane. There's a kind of delicious irony in in too.

I guess I could use the time for something productive. I have freebie commissions from people for pages and code, and there's likely a good deal of work that the Professor, Uriel, and DJ Rage need for game. I could also be putting down real stories. In High School I was an avid writer, not always an amazing one, but I was always working on some plot or story. I always wanted to be published, actually I wanted to write for comic books. Not a very realistic career goal, but a dream none the less. I've just been so paranoid over the years about sharing anything for fear of losing it. I shudder at the thought of someone reading this blog if it had 'original' story ideas. My personal thoughts, fine, my gaming stuff, whatever, occasional forays into my love life? Well, it wouldn't bug me any, but those of you who didn't vomit on your keyboards would never talk to me again, and my wife would skin me alive, so that's verboten I guess, but I'd still do that before I let one WORD of original plot in the blog.

So there we go I guess, I'm insane, and I'm writing about it. This has become a Necronomablog.

Those who know me are occasionally surprised I attempt art on occasion. Some of my most successful are songs. And while listening to a lot of christian music a few years back, I realized that they songs are 'clean' but they don't express anything about faith. It got me thinking that I should be able to write a solid christian song expressing the depth of my faith.

For three years I've been thinking that.

I've got a theme, and one stanza.

THe reasons why this won't come together are a sicussion for more private forums, but I want to toss this up here, and see if it gets anything. THe song is titled "Tears of the Father" and I want to express how as deeply as we feel for our children, God feels so much more deeply for us, and how deeply must it hurt him that all he asks is so little, and all he gives is so much, but we chose not to take it. Complex, I know, but a song I think worth writing. I've planned on starting the focus on humans, then swinigng it to devine by analogy. Here's what I have so far.

So I went into a Subway todya, and I'm ordering a sandwhich. I can barely hear the lady taking my order, and they're more than a little slammed. I'm thinking, like most of us, how lackluster service has become in this day and age.

Then, as they're making my actual sandwhich (not jus tone of the six I'm ordering) I ask for something. This little voice in teh back of mty head, the one that sounds like my mother, says "When you ask for sotheing , say please." So, I do. They stop, and just stare at me. "Thanks," says this kid, who I honestly though was spun worse thana two-bit top "You're the first person to say that all day long."

It got me thinking, are THEM the problem, causingteh lack ofpolitelness and service in this country, and is the problem US, so wrapped up in be served that we forget that common curtesies are only common if we have them too?

Here is the Post for the Forsaken Game on September 17th

The Cahalith sing of a golden age, the age of Pangea, with longing in their howls. This was great time, a time of perfection.

The Cahalith sing of a dark time, then, if the death of Father Wolf and the sundering of the two worlds.

The circle turns and the cycle advances.

The Cahalith sing of a better time, when Mother Luna forgave her children and granted them the boon of her Auspices. This was a time of retribution of new growth for old souls.

The Cahalith sing of a darker time, when the Pure ones emerged, and great battles took place, and the truth of what ti was to be Forsaken was first learned.

The circle turns and the cycle advances.

The Cahalith sing of a questing time, when the First Born were petitioned and the tribes of The People were brought into being. This was an age of growth, of new beginnings and great deads.

The Cahalith sing of a bloody time, of the Brethern wars, and the dark tool paid by all. This was an ending here, the end of Uratha in the realms of San Diego.

The circle turns and the cycle advances.

Now the Cahalith call to you. The Tribes of the Moon has returned to San Diego. Packs are forming, and territories are being claimed. But which ones have been taken by the spirit courts, and which are still available? And who will support these young groups in their quest? The loci of Balboa Park have been devoured by hungry spirits, but are there others that have survived the years better? And can they be taken and held?

Join us this Saturday for the first Forsaken game under the revised VSS. Check-in will begin at noon, and the first part of game will be a roundtable question and answer session, with character creation assistance available. The old VSS will be discussed and proposed changes ran by those present. In character interaction will begin around 2:30, or sooner if we finish all that stuff, and will run until around 5:00.

Game will be held in the garden at SDSU in front of the Hardy Tower.

So I woke up this morning, and I wished I hadn't. It comes over me every now and again, this deep feeling that I've utterly failed. The sad fact is, it's largely true. I started this week on fire, I actually worked for four hours on Monday, not sat round, working on RPGs and reading Live Journals. I was going to knock out long term projects, clean my office and house, start a diet, go to church, read my bible all those things your supposed to do.

By wednesday I wasn't even getting up to go to work. I saw Charlie Daniels in concert Wednesday night. He rocked. But He also reminded em that back in High School, I had fire, I had purpose, I had drive.

Now I have a fat belly and a predilection for pr0n.

I'm disappointed with myself, and that really sucks.
